Volunteering FAQs

We require a minimum commitment of weekly or fortnightly volunteering for 3 months. However, many of our passionate volunteers have been with the Museum for more than 20 years!

In most cases you don't need any special skills to volunteer except a willingness to learn and an enjoyment of working with other people; we provide the training where necessary.  However, we also welcome people who have more specific skills in areas like engineering, sailing, modelmaking and boat maintenance.

  • Sailing crew / Steam Engineer
  • Visitor Host
  • Tour Guide
  • Model Maker
  • Library Assistant
  • Vessel maintenance crew
  • Education Host
  • Collections and Exhibitions

Volunteers play an incredibly important part in bringing the Museum experience alive for our visitors, and our Volunteers are greatly appreciated by the Museum staff. The Volunteers enjoy interacting with the museum team, socialising as a group, and meeting visitors from all over the world.

Ready to volunteer? Simply fill out the online application form.  We also have printed application forms available at the ticket desk – so check out the museum first (free entry with proof of Auckland residency) and then fill out your application before you depart.
