Auckland's Jono Ridler gained fame for his remarkable Swim4TheGulf in May 2023, swimming nearly 100km without breaks or a wetsuit from Aotea Great Barrier to Campbells Bay. This feat shattered New Zealand's open water record, raised Gulf awareness, and led to a Parliament visit. Starting in his 20s, Jono's passion for open water swimming ignited during a local event. Prior, he achieved the 'Triple Crown of Marathon Swimming' by conquering Cook Strait (2019), Lake Taupo (2020), and Foveaux Strait (2021).
Experienced marine ecologist Lydia Green has studied manta rays since 2013, researching populations in Fiji, Mexico, the Maldives, and New Zealand. Oceanic manta rays are endangered globally, including New Zealand, where their status is poorly understood. Lydia founded Manta Watch NZ Trust in 2017 to study these rays. As Project Manager for Manta Watch Aotearoa NZ, she oversees data, community engagement, and outreach programs.
